Participants will explore the rich tradition of assemblage art within Black American visual culture, rooted in the spiritual and artistic legacies of the Bakongo people of Central Africa.<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_x_x_elementToProof\" dir=\"ltr\" data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\" data-ogsb=\"rgb(255, 255, 255)\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"x_x_x_elementToProof\" dir=\"ltr\" data-ogsb=\"rgb(255, 255, 255)\"><span data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\">The session will begin with a brief lecture introducing the concept of <i data-ogsc=\"\">Minkisi<\/i> <\/span><span data-ogsc=\"rgb(200, 38, 19)\">(sacred vessels) <\/span><span data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\">and their cultural transformations within African American communities\u2014specifically focusing on the practice of Memory Jug making in the Black South. A memory jug is a commemorative vessel created to honor a departed loved one.<\/span> <span data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\">In the early 1900s, memory jugs were commonly found attached to grave markers throughout the South.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"x_x_x_elementToProof\" dir=\"ltr\" data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\" data-ogsb=\"rgb(255, 255, 255)\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"x_x_x_elementToProof\" dir=\"ltr\" data-ogsb=\"rgb(255, 255, 255)\"><span data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\">This workshop serves as a thematic continuation of the three-day performance series <a href=\"https:\/\/www.speedmuseum.org\/events-programs\/sam-gilliam-visiting-artist-program\/vanessa-german\/\"><em><u data-ogsc=\"\">Future Histories of Emancipation<\/u><\/em><\/a>, created by <\/span><span data-ogsc=\"rgb(200, 38, 19)\">contemporary assemblage<\/span><span data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\"> artist Vanessa German, <\/span><span data-ogsc=\"rgb(200, 38, 19)\">whose work will be highlighted as a modern-day <\/span><span data-ogsc=\"rgb(12, 136, 42)\">inheritance<\/span><span data-ogsc=\"rgb(200, 38, 19)\"> of the Bakongo legacy. \u00a0<\/span><span data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\">The <\/span><span data-ogsc=\"rgb(200, 38, 19)\">performance <\/span><span data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\">series<\/span><span data-ogsc=\"rgb(200, 38, 19)\">, held in October 2025,<\/span> <span data-ogsc=\"rgb(12, 136, 42)\">acted as ceremonial ritual to honor the Black girls enrolled in the Colored Girls Dormitory of 1896 at the Louisville Industrial School Reform.
